Death of the Subject explores the disturbing flow of media brainwashing and doxxing culture and suggests to break the cycle by moving offline.

In Boris Groys’ Into the Flow he explains that being offline is the act of contemplation that leaves no trace and therefore does not belong in the material world. The death of the subject means the incapacity of the subject to communicate and contribute their own message therefore becoming a secret. Death of the Subject explores the disturbing flow of media brainwashing and doxing culture, suggesting to break the cycle by pausing and becoming symbiotic with nature to exist formless, in the now. The media cycle (tabloid) continues to validate this behavior that has trickled down to all classes (non-celebrity) resulting in loss of job, housing, community and suicide. The death of one’s image is a blessing in disguise. Although painful, the rebirth creates an open minded existence, a freedom from the attachment of the image of the self.

The present day art dealer or record label profits off of controversial acts that are dead but rarely do they take risks when there is no monetary gain. The image is created and projected onto the artist as a brand or a marketing tool. The image could also be created by the artist themself and acted out in order to get a message across. That message or image will, if successful, be profitable. Viewers, listeners, fans will be attracted to the image. They find meaning in the image. A reason to live. The image helps humanity and media companies survive. We must remember survival is not possible without access to the flow of capital. It’s time for the removal of your image. because not all images are allowed to enter the flow. Can the removal of our image bankrupt the media? Is life possible without participating in the flow?

How do we remove our misrepresented image from the internet? Companies take our image and brand us. Once our image is taken and put up online we no longer have control or ownership over it. The only change that can happen will happen in the present so the best way to remove your image is by no longer putting your image online. Specifically how citizens participate in doxing, a learned behavior from the media that relies on controversy to make money. My reaction to doxing is from direct experience. I’ve seen all kinds of people suffer psychologically resulting in relapse, severe alienation and suicide. The platform Uncensored New York was started in response to this dehumanizing behavior. We open our doors and offer support to all walks of life.

We are subjected to a never ending media cycle that creates and destroys public facing figures. My installation of Marilyn Manson editorials is a critique on media’s conscious choice to profit from the seduction of image. The media’s role in the creation and destruction of celebrity is obvious. Manson has always been a controversial figure. The title Hysterical, Dangerous and Perfect Pop-culture Fun is taken directly from a Rolling Stone’s cover story published in 1997. Whether being embraced or disowned, his bad behavior has always been a money making scheme.
